Margaret’s House provides noon time meals and some evening meals each day to those who are hungry and/or homeless. They are looking for volunteers to work at Margaret’s house whether on a regular, frequent, infrequent, casual or call-in basis. Times would be from 10 am to 1:30 pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (most crucial) but they could use people on Monday and Friday as well.

If you would like more information on what these volunteering duties would be, please call Karen at 464-2919.

Q. Name of charity and location?

A.
Feeding Others Of Dartmouth at Margaret's House, 43 Wentworth St.

Q. What kind of work does your organization do?

A. A hot, nutritious evening meal is served from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Lunch is served from 12 to 12:30 p.m. seven days a week. We are also members of FEED Nova Scotia. They bring us day-old bread and we put it our for people to take home with them. We also distribute warm sweaters, gloves, hats, underwear, boots and things like can openers and pots and pans to the needy while focusing on making Margaret's House a warm and home-like place for those who come by.

Q. How long has your organization been active, and how many volunteers do you have?

A. We have been active for more than 20 years and have hundreds of volunteers.

Q. Where do you get your funding?

A. The community offers us support, as well as local churches. We have a small provincial grant that covers our part-time workers and our utilities.

Q. Who do you help?

A. We served 35,000 meals last year. Any adults in the Dartmouth area are welcome here. We don't ask for ID, and you don't have to be a member.

Q. What do you focus on for the holiday season?

A. We focus on talking with people who use our services. Many are long-term mental health consumers and often people are depressed at this time of year, so we take care not to decorate for Christmas too early. We are aware of people's situations.

Q. What is your biggest challenge?

A. Our biggest challenge this time of year is getting men's warm winter boots and warm underwear and socks and blankets. We would welcome anyone who could help out with purchasing these items.

Q. What do you find most rewarding?

A. How wonderful it is to meet the people who use our services. Too often we take things for granted. I have been thanked by people for just taking the time to have a five minute conversation with them. It is also very rewarding to work with such incredible volunteers and to see how compassionate they are.

Q. How can the community help this season?

A. If anyone has extra food left over after Christmas parties they can bring it to us. We always need the warm clothing and are in need of grocery bags.

Q. If you could have one Christmas wish fulfilled this year, what would it be?

A. My wish would be that every person has something to smile about this Christmas. And that they are especially happy when they help someone else.
